Flower to the People!
With a gloriously sunny day as a backdrop, the long-awaited grand unveiling of the Blue Plaque commemorating Peter Barr - the Daffodil King - took place on 21st September at the entrance to Aboyne Estate at the intersection of Wimbledon Road and Garrett Lane.
This project has been close to our hearts at the Scrapstore as our volunteer Berit Ahmad has been deeply involved in the artistic direction. On 21st September, Berit's fabulous giant daffodils were featured as well as a 'daffodil chain' made by residents at various community events throughout the summer (including our very own Hazelfest), all made from upcycled materials provided by the Scrapstore.
The mayor of Wandsworth, Councilor Jane Cooper addressed the crowd. We also heard from Geoff Simmons, Leaer of this project and Summerstown182 community history project team leader, John Brown of the Streatham Society, Sally Kingston, former International Daffodil Registrar, Bruce St Julian of the Wandle Valley Forum, John Byrne, pupils from Broadwater Primary School, and Jan Pennings, Chair of the RHS Bulb Committee.
After the unveiling, daffodil bulbs were planted to launch the public mass-planting campaign in the area. The event was rounded off with a walk along the “Daffodil Chain” to Streatham Cemetery were tea and cake was kindly provided by The Friends of Streatham Cemetery.
What a fabulous project and what a wonderful local community event. We're so proud at the Scrapstore to have been so deeply involved in this!
